London City Schools plans to build tennis courts at the middle school and replace the courts at the high school with parking. District leaders also are talking about adding an entranceway to the elementary and high school campus off of Keny Boulevard. The projects are part of the district’s long-term planning for facilities.
The new tennis courts will be located at the south end of the middle school, near the bus turnaround, and will be accessible from the middle school and the high school. There will be six courts, one more than what the district has now. The estimated cost is $1 million. Permanent improvement (PI) funds will pay for the project.
“We’ve been aggressive about saving our PI moneys. We’re able to use those funds to reinvest back into the campus,” said Dr. Lou Kramer, district superintendent. “This is an exciting project for us. In the last 10 years, we have had to invest a significant amount of money in maintaining our tennis courts, about $40,000 to $50,000 at a time.”
The new tennis courts are slated for construction in 2025. The hope, Kramer said, is that they are completed in time for the fall competition season. Just as the existing courts are now, the new courts will be available to the community to use when the district’s sports teams aren’t using them.
About the entranceway project, Kramer said, “Close to 900 homes are being constructed across (Keny Boulevard) from campus. We are anticipating an additional entranceway would be a significant help to traffic flow throughout the elementary and high school campus.”
He said the parking project and the additional access project will be done after the new tennis courts are finished, “perhaps in 2026 to 2027.”
